Through EcoStitch Apparel Trades and our learning pathways, we help youth and adults turn creativity into respected career and workforce opportunities while caring for people and the planet.

When a student realizes the shirt they were about to throw away can become a tote bag, a skirt, or the start of a small business, something shifts. They stop seeing fashion as disposable and start seeing themselves as designers, problem-solvers, and leaders.
Why Rethinking Fashion Matters
Right now, humanity is consuming resources as if we had about 1.7 Earths. Some global analyses warn that if everyone consumed like today’s highest-consuming countries, we would need the equivalent of 3–7 Earths to sustain our lifestyles. Fast fashion and disposable clothing are a major part of that footprint—from carbon emissions to water use and textile waste—which is why EarthSmart and EcoStitch teach a different way to design, buy, and produce.
The global fashion industry is responsible for an estimated 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions—more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined—and is one of the world’s heaviest water users.
Every year, around 92 million tons of textile waste are generated worldwide—the equivalent of a garbage truck of clothes being landfilled or burned every second.
A single cotton T-shirt can require 700+ gallons of water to produce, and a pair of denim jeans nearly 2,000 gallons—about 2,700 gallons total, roughly 20,000 single-use water bottles, enough to hydrate over 5,000 people for a day.
In the United States, the average person still throws away more than 80 pounds of clothing each year, sending over 11 million tons of textiles to landfills annually.
